Birmingham,Alabama
Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) represents approximately 130,000 members of the civil engineering profession worldwide, and is America's oldest national engineering society. ASCE's vision is to position engineers as global leaders building a better quality of life.

The practice of civil engineering is broad and diverse, ranging from power generation and water resources to structural and transportation engineering. Similarly, the actions of ASCE support and bolster a wide range of goals and practices. The best way of exploring ASCE is through the International ASCE web site located at http://www.asce.org.

Birmingham was founded in 1871 at the junction of two railroads. It quickly grew into an iron and steel giant earning it the nickname of "The Magic City". The Great Depression brought about a new economy for the area. Out of the fall of the steel industry rose a new service and research driven economic base.

The branch founded in 1970, now has over 500 members
representing both the public and private sectors.
The branch members stay active in the community and
work together to provide a voice to the local,
state and federal governments.
