UTA's Girlgeneering Camp
Posted: April 6, 2009

If you have a 5th through 9th grade daughter interested in engineering or know a junior high aged young lady, we highly recommend UTA's Girlgeneering Camp . It is a summer camp to introduce junior high aged girls to engineering. They have professionals and professors for all disciplines of engineering speak to the girls. They allow the girls to pick their interests and then perform hands-on lab projects to gain practical experience. Camp is Mon-Fri July 20-24, 2009 from 8-5 each day. It is $100 and they feed them and take them on field trips. The camp ends with a capstone presentation from each group summarizing their projects. Scott Berman was personally impressed with what all the girls learned in one week (his daughter attended last year and will again this year).

UTA is currently looking for campers. Please pass the word along for any interested young ladies. Also note the registration deadline is May 1st.

U.S. Congressman Joe Barton Biography
Posted: December 2, 2008

Congressman Joe Barton was first elected to serve the Sixth District of Texas in 1984. He currently serves as the ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over energy, public health, commerce, trade, telecommunications, and other marketplace interests.

Barton has committed himself to passing energy legislation that promotes high supply, low demand, consumer-friendly prices while ensuring environmental protection. His efforts to develop comprehensive national energy legislation led to the passage and enactment of the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

A founding co-chairman of the Congressional Privacy Caucus, he continues to work to preserve the financial and medical privacy of Americans and has promoted safety and privacy in the ever-expanding Internet universe. He remains committed to improving the way medical research is conducted at the federal level and ensuring adequate funding is provided.

Barton remains among the steadfast House leaders on tax reform through the promotion of lower taxes and financial freedom, and he continues to fight for the basic traditional rights put forth by our Founding Fathers.

Joe Barton was born on September 15, 1949 in Waco, Texas. He attended Texas A&M University, where he was the outstanding industrial engineering student for the Class of 1972, and went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Industrial Administration from Purdue University. In 1981, he was selected for the prestigious White House Fellows Program, and served as an aide to then-Energy Secretary James B. Edwards.

Barton and his wife Terri have homes in Ennis and Arlington, Texas. He has four children, two stepchildren and four grandchildren.

Liquid Assets: The Story of Our Water Infrastructure
Posted: October 22, 2008

Liquid Assets

Liquid Assets is a public media and outreach initiative that seeks to inform the nation about the critical role that our water infrastructure plays in protecting public health and promoting economic prosperity. Produced in partnership with ASCE by Penn State Public Broadcasting, the documentary is the centerpiece of an outreach effort to make the public more aware of the threats to our drinking water and processing of wastewater by our reliance on infrastructure that in some places is more than a century old.

Combining a ninety-minute documentary with a community toolkit for facilitating local involvement, Liquid Assets explores the history, engineering, and political and economic challenges of our water infrastructure, and engages communities in local discussion about public water and wastewater issues. See the compelling documentary and encourage others to watch -- from your neighbors to influential decision-makers.

Liquid Assets will air locally on Sunday, October 26 at 4:30pm on Channel 13, KERA. For more information visit the Liquid Assets website.

Letter of Appreciation from UTA CE Department
Posted: June 10, 2008

On behalf of the Department of Civil Engineering at UT Arlington, I would like to express our deep appreciation for the recent $6,525 scholarship gift from the Dallas and Ft. Worth Branches of ASCE. The scholarship funds were raised during the annual golf tournament held between the two branches. We express our gratitude to all branch members who participated in the tournament and made this contribution possible. The donated funds will be added to our existing Professor Dayle Clarke Endowed Professorship Fund, mostly built on contributions from the two local ASCE Branches. The scholarships from this endowment will be very useful to us in recruiting and retaining top-quality graduate students in our program, thereby assisting us in our endeavor towards academic excellence and achieving Tier 1 status in the north Texas area.
