Younger Member Chili & Football Party
Posted: September 22, 2008

Scott Berman gladly hosted the Younger Member chili/football party at his house on Sunday, September 7 for opening day of the 2008-2009 football season. About 20 ASCE members with families and friends showed up to swim, jump on the trampoline, play Guitar Hero, watch football and eat 20 pounds of chili! No injuries were suffered except the poor unfortunate soul who at the habanero pepper! We had a great time and are trying to prepare for our next outing at NASCAR in November!

Younger Members Lend a Helping Hand to Fort Worth's Foster Children
Posted:
September 1, 2004

In an ongoing relationship with the foster children of Fort Worth, the Fort Worth Branch ASCE Younger Member Group was asked to help renovate a warehouse where the staple needs for the children are kept. The non-profit organization maintains a warehouse in Fort Worth where clothing, diapers, strollers, shoes, toys, cosmetic supplies and other necessary items can be accessed when the child is placed in foster care. The warehouse is maintained through volunteer efforts and was in dire need of repairs. The Fort Worth Younger Member Group banded together once again to remove the damaged interior and remodel the interior to resemble that of a retail store. Our group spent several weekends and any spare time donating their efforts to accomplish this project. We would like to recognize and commend Kyle Dykes for his outstanding leadership and woodworking skills in the design and construction of the interior of the warehouse. We must also commend the Maguire twins, Rian and Rory, for their unselfish participation and tireless efforts. It is great to have built a reputation where people recognize and know that our volunteer group is always ready to help our community.

Younger Members Help Christmas Wish Project
Posted: January 2, 2004

On Thursday December 18, 2003 the Fort Worth Branch Younger Member volunteer group participated in probably their most worthy cause to date. We had 15 volunteers donate their engineering talents to assemble Christmas Toys for foster children in coordination with The Christmas Wish Project. The Christmas Wish Project is a local non-profit organization in which all proceeds are donated to help foster children. The Christmas Wish Project collects Christmas gift wish lists from local foster children and fulfills the wishes of over 300 children annually by purchasing toys through donated funds. The toys are assembled through volunteer efforts and delivered to the children for Christmas. Toys that needed assembly included bicycles, tricycles, and wagons. It is amazing how many engineers it takes to assemble a child's toy. There was no trouble recruiting people for this event. In fact, many engineers brought their spouses and friends. What a tremendous feeling to be part of a group that has been able to provide a brighter Christmas for children who might otherwise not have had one at all.

Younger Members Youth Outreach

November 12, 2003

On Friday November 7, 2003 Fort Worth Younger Member Chair, Scott Berman, and PhD member Timothy Hogue spoke for Career Day at Fort Worth's Como Elementary School. Our two members teamed up to speak to three classes of 4th grade level students on the profession of Civil Engineering. Their presentation included an introduction to what Civil Engineers do, how to become a Civil Engineer, the role of professional societies like ASCE and the importance of community service and teamwork. They also performed demonstrations for the students. Scott demonstrated the flotation of concrete used for concrete canoe design and Timothy, a forensic structural engineer, demonstrated structural materials and deformation through the use of concrete cylinder specimens, steel torsion specimens, various wood and brick specimens and a miniature building frame. The children were fascinated and intrigued with the presentation.

"Thanks to Timothy Hogue for participating. He was an excellent speaker for the children. This was an extremely rewarding experience for me and I believe for the children as well. I plan to continue to participate in these functions and highly recommend anyone interested to participate." -Scott Berman

Fort Worth Branch Helps Boo at the Zoo
Posted:
November 1, 2003

On Wednesday October 29, 2003 the Fort Worth Branch Younger Member Group had nine volunteers participate in "Boo at the Zoo". Boo at the Zoo is an annual event held by the Fort Worth Zoo where children who attend the Zoo are treated with extra fun and games and candy stations that are manned completely through volunteer efforts. This is an extremely fun event for both the zoo attendees and the volunteers. An ordinary group of engineers by day transformed themselves into a fun-loving group of characters for an evening with the children. A good time was had by all! We handed out candy and entertained nearly 5,000 kids! Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped. The Fort Worth Zoo and all of the children and families were very appreciative. We'll see you next year.

Another Fort Worth Branch Community Service Project!
Posted:
September 3, 2003

UPDATE: Younger Members recognized by national ASCE in Section Informant Newsletter! Click here to read the newsletter

Recently, the Fort Worth Branch ASCE Youth Member Group volunteered to help Habitat for Humanity landscape one of its community project houses. The project was located in the northwest Fort Worth metropolitan area near Meacham Airport. On August 2nd, we had ten dedicated ASCE members showing up to help with the landscaping. Everyone did an exceptional job, with people rotating on the pickaxes (Alicia Martinez was exceptional with the pickaxe), shovels, and planting duty to get the job done. The ASCE volunteers were able to lay down the new sods, planted the tree and flowers, and cleaned up the site in less than four hours in spite of the searing Texas temperature (high of 102 F) and materials arriving late. Even though the work was hard, all the volunteers had a great time.

The finished landscape added character and charm to the project house. Both Habitat for Humanity and the house owner were very pleased with the end result and expressed their great appreciation and thanks to all the volunteers for their time and effort. Congratulations to Fort Worth ASCE YM group on a job well done. A special thanks to YM Son Ngo for initiating this event.

15th Annual Dallas v. Fort Worth ASCE Golf Tournament
Posted:
May 18, 2004

On Friday afternoon May 7th, 2004, 100 of DFW's finest civil engineering golfers took over the West Course of the Bear Creek Golf Club inside the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. This is an annual charity event in which all proceeds are donated to the University of Texas at Arlington's Scholarship Fund in the name of ASCE. The Dallas and Fort Worth ASCE Branches alternate organizing and hosting the event. This year was Fort Worth's turn to host. Scott Berman and Rian Maguire spent four months promoting the event and recruiting sponsors and players. We had a great turnout and the weather was beautiful. Rian sold Mulligan's and a throw and a kick to many of the players, which helped bring in some low scores. We had two Fort Worth teams come in with a score of 55 and one from Dallas with a 56. Although close, the trophy and bragging rights will stay in Fort Worth for another year. Congratulations to the long drive champ, Jarod Smith and the closest to the pin, Louie Bazan. After lunch, a round of golf, and the prize raffle, the event generated over $4,000 that will be donated to UTA. We had a great time and look forward to next year. Thanks to all the sponsors and players!
