The practice of civil engineering depends on obtaining a Professional Engineers (P.E.) license. The license is granted after:
- Engineering education by an accredited program, such as the program at CSU, Fresno,
- Engineering experience approved by the California Engineering and Land Surveying Examining Board (two years of approved work experience with a B.S., or six years without a degree), and
- Examination (successfully passing the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam).
California Department of Consumer Affairs - Engineering and Land Surveying Examining Board
A student in an accredited engineering program may take the Fundamentals of
Engineering Exam during the semester directly before his or her graduation.
A graduate may not take the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam until
completing a period of approved experience.
