JOIN ASCE AND BECOME A MEMBER OF A DYNAMIC ORGANIZATION
As a member of the Lansing/Jackson Branch of ASCE, you will have the opportunity to meet in a casual, but professional atmosphere to hear about, discuss and take part in activities that affect all of us. Committee participation at the local, state and/or national levels is available and provides opportunities for networking and meeting others with similar interests and concerns. As an example, ASCE has undertaken a lead position on critical and long-range programs at the local, state and national levels, in both the legislative and technical areas. The Branch level programs for these areas either exist or are being developed. These programs, which range from the Infrastructure to the Environment, provide excellent opportunities for members to become involved at the grass-roots level and provide direction and guidance, as the programs are developed and implemented. Participation in these programs also provides a public platform to elevate the profession of Civil Engineering to the general public, And, through the ASCE honors and awards, engineers who have made substantial and outstanding accomplishments to the profession are identified and awarded.
But, that is only the beginning, as you will also have the resources and benefits of a national organization that is keyed to providing its members with access to current information on technical and professional issues related to Civil Engineering. These resources include magazine and newsletter, online access to over 80,000 bibliographic/abstracted records and research journals, a video library of engineering topics and a new cybrarian service that can help find background information or research data for reports and projects. Also available are the following six (6) specialty Institutes, which make specialty area information and services even easier to access.
- Architectural Engineering Institute
- Construction Institute
- Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute
- Environmental & Water Resources Institute
- Geo-Institute
- Structural Engineering Institute
ASCE also provides career resource programs and technical information relevant to your projects. These programs can be taken at regional locations, online, or in your office. ASCE also provides personal and financial programs, as well as an E-mail forwarding program which allows members to establish a free, permanent ASCE-related e-mail address that forwards to their current e-mail account.
It all begins when you contact Brian Abbott, the ASCE Membership Chairperson of the Lansing/ Jackson Chapter (abottc@msu.edu,517-339-1226). He will provide all the information needed to join, as well as answering any questions that you may have. The next step is yours.
