Branch Meeting - Dams with Frozen Components
Virtual monthly meeting for the Mat-Su Branch, covering branch business and a topic of interest.
Dams with Frozen Components: Design, Construction, and Performance Monitoring
Dams with frozen components rely on permafrost for containment and stability at locations where the excavation of overburden soils to bedrock is impractical and cost prohibitive. This presentation will provide an overview of frozen core and frozen foundation dams constructed on ice-rich permafrost soils. The thermal designs and construction methods used to overcome site-specific challenges associated with the climate, foundation conditions, and lack of suitable borrow material will be discussed. Thermal performance of two dams will be highlight to demonstrate major difference in heat transfer through the embankment fill and foundation.
