Let's Build
On Tuesday November 27, 2007, Steve Lacz, Northern Branch Representative, had the privilege of talking to 80 kindergartners, at Greensboro Academy in Greensboro. The four classes were instructed about tools and measurement as part of their science studies. The ASCE Section along with Universal Studios and Scholastic Books has teamed up on the Curious George - Let’s Build program to develop educational
materials that introduce engineering design concepts to students in grades K-1. In between lessons, Steve communicated what a Civil Engineer does and what tools are used to perform our work. He also brought tools from home and work for the children to identify (name and use) and pass around. In addition to the standard screwdriver and wrench, the toolbox contained a calculator, laser level, engineers scale, C clamp and plumb bob just to name a few. Steve along with Mrs. Hicks, Mrs. Fuller, Mrs. Hamilton and Mrs. Shaw from the Greensboro Academy shared a wonderful experience with the youngsters. If anyone from the engineering community has the opportunity or desire to participate in the program, Steve highly
recommends it! This can be done anytime of the year, but February is an outstanding time to take part in promoting Civil Engineering among students of any age during National Engineers week. If you are interested in volunteering for this activity, feel free to contact Steve or any of the Northern Branch officers for assistance.
