COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS

The Soderberg Homestead Open Space
Trailhead Improvements

In the fall of 2003, branch members began looking for a project that is visible to the public, has needs that members can provide, and is something that will be constructed within a year.  Following substantial discussions, a collaboration was established with Larimer County Parks and Open Lands for the NCB to plan, design, create construction documents and provide construction oversight for the completion of the Soderberg Homestead Trailhead project.  This project is multi-disciplinary in nature, and more than a dozen branch members throughout design provided expertise in planning, layout and circulation, grading, drainage, water distribution, parking lot surface design, sanitary, and landscaping. The plans are complete and construction will begin in late September. The project, when completed in December, will relieve congestion to one of Larimer County’s most popular parks, Horsetooth Mountain Park. The dedication ceremony will acknowledge the contribution of ASCE as well as celebrate the 50th anniversary of the County Parks and Open Lands Department.

Meegan Flenniken, Larimer County Resource Specialist and manager of the project, clearly recognizes the value of the NCB contribution. “Thank you for all the volunteer time that numerous ASCE members are providing for the project. This project has provided a successful opportunity for County staff and the civil engineering community to work together toward a greater community goal. This will be an outstanding asset to the citizens of Larimer County.”
