Annual Joint ASCE/SFGI Dinner Presentation

Thursday, February 23, 2017 - 06:00 PM - Friday, February 24, 2017 - 02:00 AM

Please join us and SFGI (San Francisco Geo-Institute) for this annual event that always sells out!

Presentation Topic:

Case study of general tectonic setting of the Monterey Bay region, Elkhorn Slough, and sea level rise.

Elkhorn Slough is California’s second largest Estuary and the United States first estuarine sanctuary. It occupies central Monterey Bay which is influenced by the San Andreas Fault system and the tectonic microplate Salinia. Elkhorn Slough is a young drowned river valley that has been evolving rapidly in the late Pleistocene and Holocene; unfortunately in recent years due to sea level rise and other human activities, the wetlands of Elkhorn Slough are experiencing rapid erosion and drowning.

Speaker(s)

David Schwartz

David Schwartz is currently the only full time Geology and Oceanography instructor at Cabrillo College. He is also the Department Chair of Geology, Oceanography and Environmental Science. He is a member of the Science Panel for the Elkhorn Slough Tidal Wetland Watch whose mission is to resolve erosion problems and preserve wetlands in Elkhorn Slough. He also works with the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. David has also been working with faculty and students from San Lorenzo Valley High School (SLVHS) for the past 20 years. He mentors SLVHS students in beach profiling research projects, and gives lectures and leads field trips to the Environmental Science A.P. students.

He obtained a B.S. degree in Geology and Mineralogy from The Ohio State University in the spring of 1979. David earned a M.S. degree in Marine Geology from San Jose State University and Moss Landing Marine Labs in 1983. His emphasis is in marine geology, estuarine evolution and coastal systems. His master’s thesis on the Geologic History of Elkhorn Slough was published in "Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science" in 1986 and again in "Changes In A California Estuary" in 2002.

His ongoing passion is to clean up the coastal environment and raise awareness of global marine debris. He has hosted 37 coastal cleanups over the last 19 years and is proud to be an active member of Clean Oceans International since 2012.
