An Overview of Water Resources Development with the Santa Ynez Chumash Tribe
The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians owns and operates the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California. The Casino Resort Complex was completed in 2004, and a major expansion of the casino and hotel was completed in 2016. The Chumash Casino Resort includes over 200,000 SF of casino/gaming area, and a 320-room 4-diamond hotel. Today, this Resort sees an average of 8,800 patrons per day, and employs over 3,000 people to staff this Resort Complex. Sustainability is a top priority of the Tribe, and the Resort Complex is an exemplary model of sustainable practices from water conservation to recycled water use, solid waste reduction, employee and patron shuttle programs, and many others. The Tribe, in conjunction with the local wastewater agency (Santa Ynez Community Services District), operates a 0.4 mgd membrane bioreactor plant that produces over 200 AFY of high quality tertiary water that is used for toilet flushing, landscape irrigation, and cooling tower makeup water to support water needs at the Resort Complex. Even amidst California's worst drought in history, the Tribe has met its water needs while preserving precious water supplies for the Santa Ynez community.

Steve Tanaka, PE, Principal Civil Engineer at Wallace Group, has been working with the Tribe since the early 2000s on numerous water supply, wastewater and recycled water projects. Steve will present an overview of the Tribe's water resource assets as they have developed over the past 16 years.
