On February 21st, in the midst of E-week, Ben Lun (Active Branch Member) and Chris Sharek (SunCoast Branch President) presented engineering information to over 100 students at Venice High School. Ben and Chris presented to about 30 honors physics students and Chris later presented to about 70 more students.

The presentation began with general engineering information, types of engineers, brochures, and a video purchased from E-week, entitled "Engineers: Turning Ideas into Reality." The presentation became more focused and students participated in a discussion about civil engineering and how our profession touches each student's life in the roads and bridges they drive on; the buildings in which they work, study, and live; the clean water they drink; trash they throw away or recycle; and the toilets they flush. The discussion was re-emphasized with ASCE's 150th Video, "From Stone to Steel."

The teacher wanted Chris and Ben to answer the one question we all asked as High School Students, "Why do you need to learn trigonometry?" Examples ranged from roadway design, estimating building height, surveying and pipeline deflection. Finally, the discussion concluded with a presentation of local area projects, answering questions about engineering, and life as a university engineering student.
