Text Box: On October 23rd, 1852, a notice was sent to civil engineers in and near New York City inviting them to attend what would be the first meeting of the American Society of Engineers and Architects, later the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). When the twelve Founders gathered at the Croton Aqueduct on November 5, 1852, and agreed to incorporate the American Society of Civil Engineers and Architects, one can only wonder if they dreamed the profound significance and long-lasting impact ASCE would have on the overall development of society. As the Society has grown from a modest two-room suite in the Chamber of Commerce Building of New York City, to the current multi-story dedicated building in Washington, DC metro area, it has become a worldwide leader for excellence in the field of civil engineering. The Society’s some 150 years experience as the premier organization for civil engineers is the result of nothing less than providing the quality technical, professional and career resources that people like you need to excel in your field. Through membership in ASCE, you are part of a community of over 130,000 professionals who work to increase society’s understanding of the marvels of civil engineering. The Board of Directors first authorized the formation of Sections in 1905 to meet the needs of members at the local level. Our Florida Section of ASCE was formed in 1929. The Cape Canaveral Branch of ASCE was formed by the Florida Section in 1959 and includes the Counties of Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin and Okeechobee. Currently, the Branch has over 360 active members. We also belong to Region 5, which includes Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Whether you are just beginning your engineering career or you are at the doorstep of retirement, there are an abundance of ways you can get involved. We are here to help you get started.
