Modeling Green Stormwater Infrastructure with ICPR

Presentation Description: Green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) is an approach to managing stormwater runoff in ways that mimic the natural environment as much as possible, using plants, soils, and stone to filter and manage stormwater more effectively. It is a distributive approach where various best management practices (BMPs) are strategically placed throughout a basin rather than concentrated in a single location. These can include rain gardens, bio swales, interceptor trees, pervious pavement, underground storage and infiltration galleries, and green roofs, among many others. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how ICPR can be used to model not only the hydrology and hydraulics of these systems but also water quality aspects such as pollutant load removal efficiencies. The new ICPR water quality module is based on event mean concentrations (EMC) for basin runoff and tracks constituents throughout the drainage network. It allows water quality assessments on a watershed-scale where literally hundreds of BMPs can be integrated into a single model allowing innovative and holistic solutions to both flooding and water quality issues. The model setup for a few individual GSIs will be demonstrated and then a comprehensive roadway redevelopment project will be presented with an integrated system of dozens of interconnected GSI devices.
