Hockey and Railroads - February 2024 Technical Luncheon - Joint meeting with MSPE
From the origins of hockey in eastern Canada, the railroads played an important role in the development and growth of the game across Canada and into the United States. The presentation will explore the role of railroads and streetcars in early hockey history and hockey leagues, and will share several railroad related stories involving Lord Stanley, the Stanley Cup, the Dawson City challenge, Thomas Edison, Gordie Howe, Tim Horton, Original Six travel, and many more.
Dr. Bill Sproule is a Professor Emeritus, Michigan Technological University, Houghton, MI, where he taught transportation engineering, public transit, airport planning and design, and hockey history for over 20 years. He is a Michigan Tech, University of Toronto, and Michigan State alumnus and is a member of several professional and historical societies including ITE, ASCE, and the Society for International Hockey Research. Bill is the author of several hockey history articles and books including Houghton: The Birthplace of Professional Hockey, and Michigan Tech Hockey: 100 Years of Memories.
