Join us as Michael Staal, P.E., takes us for a journey through the past, present, and future of the Grand River in Grand Rapids. Learn how the river came to look the way it does today—and how upcoming restoration efforts will breathe new life into the ecosystem while protecting the vital infrastructure that’s shaped the city for over a century.

Michael Staal, P.E. is a project manager with the City of Grand Rapids, with over 15 years of experience leading complex infrastructure projects in both the Great Lakes and river environments. He has led large, multi-stakeholder efforts that balance technical demands with environmental stewardship and community engagement. Known for clear communication and collaborative leadership, Michael brings a proven ability to deliver challenging projects that strengthen both infrastructure resilience and public trust. Michael earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Michigan State University and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan.
