Program: Wastewater Ponds – Assets or Liabilities?

Winery wastewater treatment, especially in older, existing facilities, often includes a wastewater pond in one way or another. While ponds can provide great benefits in managing swings in hydraulic and organic loading, low operator oversight, and built-in equalization storage, as they age they can represent large cost or environmental liabilities if not managed properly. This presentation will cover several aspects of managing or improving existing wastewater treatment ponds, including examples from a number of case studies. Specific topics will include pond lining, sludge removal, bank stabilization & erosion, leakage, and energy use.
