Active Teachers
For teachers who have participated in the past, I would encourage you to register early for the competition and participate in our workshop again this summer at Rutgers. Registration can be done utilizing the website below and signing up for the New Jersey region. The workshop is held by the Steering Committee to provide an open forum for teachers to discuss their thoughts/changes/suggestions to make the competition a more worthwhile experience for everyone.

In addition, new or interested teachers are welcome to come to get more information about the competition in terms of preparation, changes to competition rules if any and get other useful tips. We will also discuss the schedule for submissions for the upcoming competition year.  If you are interested in the workshop, please send me an email. Like last year, I will coordinate a date and time in late August that works for most.

New or Interested Teachers
I have met most of you at various teacher conferences and would also suggest for you to visit the above website, register early, participate in our workshop or feel free to call or email me with any questions you have about the competition.

A brief summary of the goals of the program
Goal: Foster an interest in math, science, and engineering through hands-on, real world applications. 

Result: Students learn how math, science and engineering shape infrastructure of the city around them.  Students also learn life skills such as problem solving, teamwork, research, written and verbal communication, computer literacy, and gain an increased awareness of community related issues. 

Key Math & Science skills
The students will be developing a city on the computer software then follow that with the development of a scale city model, the city should incorporate real world engineering concepts in its design. 

Some math and science skills utilized are as follows: scaling and measurements, fractions and number systems, computer skills, learning how changing one variable impacts other variables, relationships between three dimensional objects & geometry, applying math calculations to real world solutions, researching scientific data, basic geology and earth sciences, basic physics and engineering concepts, understanding how engineering concepts are utilized in every day life.

Key Communication and Teamwork skills
Students must be able to show the benefits of living in their city and engineering concepts utilized in the design both in writing and via oral presentation.  Students will research new technologies and determine how to utilize them in their project and write about how the incorporation of these features in their city will improve the lives of the citizens. They will also, on competition day give and oral presentation of the merits of their city to a panel of engineer judges, this will help build their public speaking ability and confidence. 

Additionally, since it is a team project, it is an opportunity to build the students communication skills with their peers, learn how to work effectively with other students and learn how to use the strengths of different people effectively as a team.

Key Social Studies and Economic Skills
Cities being designed by the students need to address all aspects of city life….budgeting and allocation of city funds and generating tax income, community issues (transportation challenges, socio-economic challenges, providing education and community services), providing power and water distribution systems, zoning development and interaction between residential, commercial and industrial areas, manufacturing and commerce, reducing pollution and ensuring a clean healthy environment.
