8-1/2 Mile Relief Drain Drainage District In-System Storage Project

Wednesday, March 8, 2023 - 11:30 AM - Wednesday, March 8, 2023 - 12:30 PM

Progressing toward cleaner water, Macomb County initiated the “in-system storage” project. The project consists of installing a permanent inflatable rubber dam inside of the existing 8-1/2 Mile Interceptor. During wet weather, rather than discharging into the Chapaton Retention Basin, the dam will be inflated to store up to 3.5 million gallons of flow. Storing flow upstream of the dam is expected to reduce treated combined sewer overflows into Lake St. Clair by roughly 15%. To install the dam, an approximately 50 feet by 70 feet temporary earth retention structure (TERS) is being constructed to allow for the approximately 35-foot excavation to expose and open the interceptor.
