Ecosystem Approach in the 21st Century: Guiding Science and Management

Thursday, April 13, 2023 - 12:00 PM - Thursday, April 13, 2023 - 01:00 PM

The ecosystem approach is one of the pillars of the Clean Water Act and the U.S.-Canada Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. It accounts for the interrelationships among air, water, land, and all living things, including humans, and involves all user groups in management. In 2022, an international ecosystem approach conference was convened that developed recommendations on how to make more effective use of an ecosystem approach in the 21st Century. A primer will be presented on the ecosystem approach, including sharing the major conference recommendations. Feedback will be solicited on the practicality of these recommendations and how an ecosystem approach is relevant to your work. These recommendations are being shared in 15 public forums throughout the Great Lakes Basin. In the end, a summary report will be prepared for broad distribution throughout the basin.

Presented by the ASCE SE MI Environmental Technical Committee.
