Presentation: "Interstate I-94 Modernization: Overcoming Public Opposition"

Tuesday, May 11, 2021 - 12:00 PM - Tuesday, May 11, 2021 - 05:00 PM

Overcoming public opposition through context sensitive public engagement and design

Join us for a presentation on the I-94 Modernization Project. At public meetings in 2015, MDOT received substantial public opposition on the project, including the City of Detroit opposing the project due to the Project’s proposed design and impacts to the surrounding neighborhoods. Due to these concerns raised by the local community, MDOT paused the construction of the project, and over the next three years, partnered with the City of Detroit, City Council members, local community organizations, and residents to evaluate and develop design modifications to the project that addressed stakeholder concerns. These design modifications were carried forward through a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) which received minimal public and agency comments and was approved by FHWA in July 2020. This presentation will elaborate on opposition and the design modifications that gained the support the project needed.
