July 2023 Lunch Meeting - ASCE SLO

Thursday, July 20, 2023 - 12:00 PM

Please join us on Thursday, July 20th to enjoy a presentation on the recent (Jan. 2023) storms. Troy Barnhart from the County of San Luis Obispo will be delivering the presentation and discuss the hydrology of this year's floods, their historical context, and considerations for the design of local drainage and flood control infrastructure.

About the Presentation:

With $40 million in damages to County infrastructure alone, the significance of the storms of early 2023 should be clear to any civil engineering professional practicing in San Luis Obispo County. Our community is working through the resulting whiplash after a generation mostly dominated by drought. You may have heard terms like 'the 100-year storm' and 'once in a lifetime' thrown around, but seasoned engineers with memories of years like 1995, 1998, and 2001 might recall that things can get quite wet around here.

County Public Works staff has crunched the rainfall and stream gauge numbers, reviewed infrastructure performance across the County, and dusted off tomes detailing floods from the 1960s-1990s. Please join us for a discussion of the hydrology of this year's floods, their historical context, and considerations for the design of local drainage and flood control infrastructure.

Speaker(s)

Troy Barnhart

Troy is an engineer with the San Luis Obispo County Public Works Department and specializes in environmental hydrology and hydraulics. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Stanford University in Earth Systems and Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Since joining Public Works in 2021, Troy primarily works with the development review and watershed planning teams on floodplain, drainage, and stormwater management challenges. The January 9th storms were an unconventional way of celebrating Troy's birthday. In the aftermath, Public Works has provided the opportunity to apply his interests to hydrologic study, failure mode analysis, and hydraulic design in support of Countywide recovery and resilience efforts.
