Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement
Lake St Roadway & Utility Improvements
Prein and Newhof
The project consisted of removing existing hot-mixed asphalt (HMA) road, upgrading underground utilities including sanitary sewer, water main, and storm sewer. Road reconstruction included concrete curb/gutter,sidewalks, ADA ramps, and restoration on both the east and west of the 1-94 business loop with a temporary closure of the Lake Street/BL intersection. Due to the nature of government and commercial businesses along Lake Street, emergency access was always required. A conduit vault approximately 3 feet x 3 feet containing nine conduits controlling all the emergency (911) and other communication lines traveled down the middle of the road. The inconsistent grade created difficulties with storm sewer installation and required constant design adjustment in real-time. Because of the water table elevation, extensive dewatering was necessary for the open-cut installation of utilities and jack-and-bore to get under the existing 6-foot storm culvert.
