ASCE Lunch and Learn: University Avenue and W 13th Street PD&E

ASCE Lunch and Learn: University Avenue and W 13th Street PD&E

Thursday, August 24, 2023 - 11:30 AM

Kimley-Horn is partnering with the City of Gainesville to conduct a Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study to evaluate the proposed reconstruction of University Avenue (SR 26) from NW 22nd Street to SE 31st Street and W 13th Street (SR 25) from SW 16th Avenue to NW 8th Avenue as complete streets, emphasizing the safety, movement, and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians within the study area. Preliminary concepts for the proposed reconstruction of University Avenue (SR 26) and W 13th Street (SR 25) were developed by HDR, Inc. and approved by the City of Gainesville Commission in April 2022. The project includes traffic and safety analyses; extensive coordination with stakeholders, residents, and adjacent property owners; and the design of improvements to balance the needs of all users within a limited right-of-way.

MRLC for Regions 1,2,4, and 5

Friday, January 26, 2024 - 07:30 AM

The purpose of the Multi Region Leadership Conference is to provide a venue for upcoming leaders to gain knowledge of the Society and their Region, interact with students, younger members, section, branch, and institute leaders, while gaining personal leadership skills and learning the importance of networking.

Participation in the Workshop strengthens and expands the programs and activities of Sections and Branches through the interchange of ideas, information and experiences, while it exposes incoming officers to the tools needed to be effective leaders. Concurrently, there will be the Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders and the Eastern Regional Younger Member Council annual meeting. We have worked diligently to ensure the success of the program and look forward to your Section and/or Branch delegate’s participation.

New River Renewable Natural Gas Project Wins ASCE FL Section Project of the Year!

The New River Renewable Natural Gas Project was nominated (and won) the Gainesville Branch Project of the Year which qualified it to be nominated for the Florida Section Project of the Year Award. Project Description:

Since its inception in 1992, the New River Solid Waste Association (NRSWA), Florida's first publicly owned, multi-county solid waste management facility formed by Baker, Bradford, and Union Counties, has been committed to providing excellent services to its customers and to using innovative industry-leading practices to optimize operations and maximize environmental protection. The New River Regional Landfill (NRRL) consists of an active 99-acre lined Class I Landfill and supporting infrastructure. NRSWA collaborates on research projects and pilot programs with the University of Florida's leading solid waste and sustainable materials management expert, Timothy Townsend, Ph.D., PE.

NRSWA's Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) project is the most recent example of its commitment to innovation and contribution to waste conversion and energy recovery. This project is the first in Florida to convert landfill gas (LFG) into pipeline-quality natural gas. It is also the first landfill to interconnect to the Florida Gas Transmission's interstate pipeline and inject processed LFG. New River's LFG is treated to meet the strict pipeline-gas specifications before being transmitted via six miles of high-pressure pipe from the landfill to the pipeline interconnect.

ASCE/AWWA Lunch and Learn: Minimum Flows and Levels in the Suwannee River Basin

ASCE/AWWA Lunch and Learn: Minimum Flows and Levels in the Suwannee River Basin

Thursday, July 27, 2023 - 11:30 AM

Over the past two decades, the District has established MFLs for a majority of its rivers and is currently focused on developing MFLs for the Upper and Middle Suwannee River segments and several priority springs. These river and spring MFLs are based on a suite of environmental flow analyses that relate changes in flows or levels to relevant recreational and ecological metrics, which often involves use of hydrologic and ecological simulation modeling. Examples include assessing how changes in flows affect instream fish and invertebrate habitat area, the frequency of floodplain wetland inundation, and the amount of time that boats can safely navigate shoals. In cases where MFLs are not being met, the District is required to develop recovery strategies that implement conservation measures, regulations, and projects to increase flows or levels to meet the MFLs. The Lower Santa Fe and Ichetucknee Rivers and associated priority springs are the focus of an ongoing regional recovery strategy.
